internship or Master thesis – Simulation tool development – modelisation of ship with Flettner Rotors

DESCRIPTION

Farwind Energy offers a naval architecture / tool development internship. Farwind Energy has different tools developed in Python to evaluate the performance of ships with Flettner rotors. Integrated in the « Performance and Simulation Team », you will contribute in the development of a simulation tool predicting the performance for conventional ships equipped with Flettners rotors.

MAIN ACTIVITIES

Python development – ​​tool for evaluating the performance of sail propulsion-assisted vessels

  • Understanding and use of existing code. Literature review on the subject of sailing propulsion assistance
  • Definition of simplified aerodynamic and hydrodynamic models to be integrated into the tool adapted to cargo ships. Collaboration and definition of CFD calculation to be carried out in collaboration with the team’s calculation engineers.
  • Definition of operating limits and optimization range in the search for the choice of the optimal rotation speed of the rotors
  • Development / Adaptation of the code
  • Validation of the code based on open literature studies

Evaluation Studies – performance of sail-assisted propulsion vessels

Different activities will be performed depending on the preferences of the candidate and the priorities of the company during the internship :

  • Performance and integration studies on different types of ships (cargo, bulk carriers, LNG, passenger ship) of rotor configurations and evaluation of gains
  • Techno-economic studies of the configurations studied – identification of the types and routes of ships most suited to the use of rotors
  • Analysis and studies of performance with weather routing software (depending on skills and progress of the internship)
  • Analysis of on onboard windmeasurement and improvement of hull/rotor interactions
  • Sensitivity studies of sensors and analysis of differences simulated or recorded values
