STAGE ou Thèse de MASTER – Simulation tool developpement –Sensitivity analysis of a Power Prediction Program used in a Flettner rotor controller

DESCRIPTION

Farwind Energy offers a model sensitivity analysis internship. Farwind energy has developed a multi-physics Python simulator allowing the pre-sizing and evaluation of the performance of ships with Flettner rotors. This simulator could also be used in a Flettner rotor model-based controller, to provide the optimal rotation speed that maximizes the fuel gain on a ship. The aim of the internship is to study the sensitivity of the different estimated parameters of the controller model on the rotational speed output and therefore to the fuel gain. A similar study can be performed on the impact of wind measurements errors and their consequences on fuel gain. The following figure maps the framework that will be used to realize the sensitivity analysis.

The aim of the internship is to better understand which parameters are more sensitive and need to be estimated with more precision when developing a ship model.
As a user of the PPP, the intern could also be asked to realize performance analysis for customers.

MAIN ACTIVITIES

Sensitivity analysis

  • Understanding and use of existing code.
  • Literature review about sensitivity analysis theory.
  • Choose the appropriate methods to realize the sensitivity analysis in the specific case of Flettner rotors controller.
  • List the different parameters to test and define the space of parameters.
  • Make a Python program to realize the sensitivity analysis based on existing Farwind resources.
  • Rank every parameter identified depending on their sensitivity.
  • Make realistic models of sensors to include in the simulation.

Simulation – Performance analysis

  • In collaboration with the performance team, create the model of a customer’s ship.
  • Realize performances study of the defined ship.
  • Realize routing analysis on the route defined by the customer.

Location and conditions of the internship

The internship will take place at FARWIND ENERGY premises located on the campus of Ecole Centrale Nantes (Loire Atlantique, France).

Desired start date: From January 2026 for 6 months
