DESCRIPTION
The aim of the internship is to investigate the aerodynamics of rotor sails integrated on a ship at full scale. The interactions between rotor sails and the hull and their impact on the rotor performance will be investigated using RANS / URANS approach. Besides, the impact of high-fidelity LES approach will also be assessed and compared to RANS results. For large simulations, the intern would have the possibility to perform calculations on a CEA HPC machine.

MAIN ACTIVITIES
- Modelling of Marine Boundary Layer (literature review and implementation of a model in StarCCM+)
- CFD Simulations (RANS / URANS / LES) of rotor sails using StarCCM+
- Sensitivity study of the apparent wind (speed and direction) on the rotor performance
- Investigation of the aerodynamics of rotor sails and their interaction with the hull of the ship
PROFILE
- Education: Fluid Mechanics / Aerodynamics / Hydrodynamics
- A first experience (internship or academic project) of CFD simulations with StarCCM+ is mandatory
- Knowledge in turbulence modeling (RANS, URANS, LES) for aerodynamic applications
- Skills / Interests: CFD Simulations / Wind Assisted Ship Propulsion / Aerodynamics / Start-up environment
LOCATION and Conditions
The internship will take place at FARWIND ENERGY premises located on the campus of Ecole Centrale Nantes (Loire Atlantique, France).
